New Sea Gull Lighting Warehouse Installs Westinghouse System to Cut Energy and Maintenance Costs

Before

After

Sea Gull Lighting sought an efficient lighting system for their new 503,000-square-foot warehouse in Burlington, N.J., with mostly high-rack aisles.

The first systems contractor they contacted suggested two inefficient systems, both of which fell short of Sea Gull's expectations. Their first design called for 600 400-watt metal halide fixtures. The other proposed redesign used 660 T8 fluorescents with six lamps per fixture. In both cases, the foot candle goal was 10.

Instead, Westinghouse engineered and installed a system comprising 510 2-lamp, 54-watt T5 high output (HO) narrow beam fixtures and 77 3-lamp, 54 watt T5HO medium beam fixtures. Completed at the end of 2005, the fixtures' beam control eliminated unnecessary light over the racks and focused it precisely where it was needed most in each aisle. At a mounting height of 33', the lighting system produced a foot candle average of 14.

"We were on the verge of installing 660 six lamp T8 fixtures. I knew that Westinghouse was in the business, so I let them value engineer the project," says Doug Fauver, Quality Assurance Manager, Sea Gull Lighting. "With their system we were able to save, over ten years, $260,000 in energy and an additional $100,000 in maintenance costs by making 7,500 less lamp changes than if we had gone with a T8 system. This was a wise investment."

Sea Gull saved $80,000 annually with the Westinghouse lighting system versus the original metal halide fixture suggestion and $26,000 versus the T8 system proposal. Westinghouse's T5 fluorescent system used 2,400 fewer lamps than the competitor's T8 lighting design and provided more foot candles than Sea Gull anticipated.

"We were thrilled that Sea Gull Lighting wanted to compare the Westinghouse precision beam system to other industry standard fixtures," says Jay Goodman, Managing Director, Westinghouse Lighting Solutions. "We were able to help Sea Gull save energy, reduce maintenance costs, and provide more foot candles on aisle operations so their employees could read the packaging labels more easily."

Westinghouse T5 lamps last over three years during normal use and the ballasts are guaranteed for five years.
