High Efficiency Westinghouse Lighting Solutions System Increases Distribution Center Light Levels, Reduces Glare

Philadelphia, PA — Faced with the choice to either re-lamp metal halides or retrofit their entire distribution center in Maumelle, Ark., ACE Hardware turned to Westinghouse Lighting Solutions for a customized T5 system that improved their lighting power density (LPD) by 65% and saved 70% in energy costs.

The 587,000 square foot distribution center needed improved lighting for storage and staging areas. Its poor lighting conditions resulted from the considerable lumen depreciation of the metal halide lamps used throughout the facility.

"We chose Westinghouse Lighting Solutions fixtures for our facility because of the incredible cost savings they were able to provide for us. Not only are we saving over 60% on energy costs, but we now have 50% less lamps to maintain and our light levels have significantly improved," said Lance Mize, ACE Hardware Facility Manager. "We are extremely pleased with the final results."

The new T5 system decreased LPD from 1.02 to .29 watts/square foot, which is well below the required levels of the Energy Policy Tax Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005). ACE has filed for the EPAct 2005 deduction and should be able to receive up to $.60/square foot in tax deductions.

Westinghouse installed 359 2-lamp T5HO narrow beam fixtures over the warehouse aisles and 303 3-lamp T5HO wide beam fixtures in the open staging area. During the second project phase, 1,073 4-lamp T8 fixtures were replaced by 365 2-lamp T5HO narrow beam fixtures and 69 3-lamp T5HO wide beam fixtures — a reduction of 639 lighting fixtures. The original T8 fixtures were used at only 50% of their potential light levels to control energy costs. With the Westinghouse system, the facility was able to set the lighting at a 100% level, while still saving energy and money.

"The ACE distribution center in Maumelle reduced its annual energy costs by more than $120,000 and increased light levels by 20% with a customized T5HO Westinghouse system," says Jay Goodman, Managing Director, Westinghouse Lighting Solutions.

The T5HO lighting system increased the average illumination in the aisles from 11 foot candles (FC) to 15 FC, and in the open staging area, from 21 to 28 FC. This increase improved visual acuity and reduced glare for ACE employees.

Westinghouse Lighting Solutions fluorescent lighting fixtures feature precise optics, advanced reflector technology, a lightweight aluminum body and proprietary easy-access ballast design. Westinghouse T5HO lamps last more than three years during normal use and the ballasts are guaranteed for five years.
